The actions below outline the steps that the Reclaimed Spaces team are currently undertaking, or are planning to undertake, to demonstrate our commitment to advancing sustainability for the clients and communities we partner with, as well as  our contributions to United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Deliver high quality, safe, reliable and cost effective services that meet the needs of our clients and the broader community.
  • Prioritise projects that focus on supporting community health and wellbeing.
  • Prioritise partners and suppliers who focus on business integrity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.
  • Petition government to create sound policy frameworks that support food security, and reduce exposure to climate-related events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.

  • Build garden beds with edible plants for disadvantaged communities.
  • Where possible we utilise locally sourced, native and/ or edible plants, and sustainable materials.
  • Prioritise partners and suppliers who focus on food security, improving soil quality and mitigating the effects of climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters. 
  • Provide free education for vulnerable communities on establishing and maintaining edible gardens.

  • Actively support the physical, mental and emotional safety and  wellbeing of our employees, partners and suppliers. 
  • Prioritise projects that support community exercise and recreation, such as shared pathways, cycleways and walkways, parks and play equipment.
  • Prioritise projects that reduce urban cooling, and improve the physical and mental wellbeing of our communities, specifically projects that seek to improve water and soil quality.

  • Building awareness of the traditional owners of the land on which we work, and educating our project teams on the importance and management of local sites. 
  • Create a culture of learning by prioritising the continuous improvement and education of our team, subcontractors and clients.
  • Support vocational training and apprenticeship programs, especially for vulnerable people, women, indigenous workers, refugees and workers with disabilities.
  • Improve horticultural literacy by supporting community education programs and the creation of digital education content.

  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality, with the inclusion of a female Director (50%) in our Executive Team.
  • Prioritise partnerships with clients and suppliers who actively support all genders, i.e. male, female, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, agender, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit, third gender, and all or a combination of these.
  • Actively develop an inclusive workplace culture, with a clear Diversity, Inclusion and Gender Equality Strategy, with provisions for flexible work and equal access to benefits such as pay, bonus payments and leave.

  • Prioritise the design and construction of water smart gardens through the use of native plants, mulch, effective planting plans and efficient irrigation.
  • Partner with suppliers who utilise smart water methods in the development of their plants and materials. 
  • Manage water usage on project sites effectively to minimise waste. 
  • Petition government to deliver the Murray Basin Plan as it was intended, particularly in the lead up to the 2024 review. 
  • Petition governments to negotiate true water justice and water management with First Nations Peoples.

  • Prioritise the use of hybrid vehicles and battery (rather than petrol) operated tools, as well as those with high energy ratings. 
  • Avoid the use of heat generating materials, such as astro turf, and preference cooling materials such as native grasses and plants. 
  • Utilise solar energy to power landscape elements, such as water features. 
  • Petition governments to set and achieve more aggressive emissions reduction targets and clean energy programs.

  • Supplier policy and  framework that shifts value exclusively from monetary benefit to considering social and environmental impacts.
  • Inducting suppliers into our environmental and diversity and inclusion strategies, and focusing on ways to identify opportunities which deliver mutual value 
  • Support safe and fair workplaces in our supply chain through an emphasis on safe, secure and flexible employment for all workers.

  • Implement sustainable production and consumption practices to reduce future economic, environmental and social costs, and strengthen economic competitiveness. 
  • Reduce food waste and support sustainable food practices through designing and building practical kitchen gardens, and supporting community gardens. 
  • Ensuring environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste to reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimise their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.
  •  Reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

  • Use our platform to improve education and awareness of human and institutional capacity to mitigate, adapt and reduce climate change climate change.

  • Serve only plant based meals at Reclaimed Spaces events and functions.

  • Minimise the use of chemical sprays and pre-emergent on commercial sites, utilising only those approved by regulatory authorities. 
  • Implement a 'no chemicals' policy on residential sites.
  • Ensure appropriate waste disposal and recycling to prevent rubbish ending up in waterways.

  • Safeguard and support our people and their families through the creation of a Domestic and Family Violence policy. 
  • Supporting programs and charities, such as Polished Man, that focus on ending violence against women and children.
  • Prioritising and promoting projects that meet our purpose of 'Strengthen[ing] the physiological, social and economic health of our community.'
